In December 1998 in the year 1998, as an amateur athlete, Kang was selected for the South Korea national team that was awarded the gold medal at the baseball tournament at the 1998 Asian Games in Bangkok, Thailand. In the tournament the team was second baseman to KBO superstar Kim Dong-Joo at third base.
Kang was signed by the Doosan Bears in 2000, playing mostly as a backup outfielder against left-handed pitchers. He was traded to the Samsung Lions in 2006 with Kim Chang-Hee in exchange for Kang Dong-Woo. Over his career in the Bears Kang compiled a .240 batting average and 10 home runs.
On December 11, 2009 at the 2009 Golden Gloves Award Ceremony, Kang was awarded “The Fair Play Trophy” and “Most Improved Player” by the KBO.
On July 27, 1997 when he was the sophomore student in the school of Korea University, Kang got his first call-up to the South Korea national baseball team for their five annual match-ups with the USA national squad at California, United States.

When he was at Kyungnam High School, Kang was regarded as one of the top baseball pitchers within the Korean high school baseball league. As a top pitcher and cleanup hitter at Kyungnam High School, he was the team’s leader to finish runners-up in the Golden Lion Flag national championship in 1994 as well as winning the Hwarang National Flag championships in 1995. In September of 1995, Kang was selected for the South Korea national junior baseball team to play in the 3 Nation Junior Baseball Tournament in Seoul, South Korea, together with Kim Sun-Woo Seo Jae-Weong, and Park Jin-Man.
When he graduated of high school in 1996, Kang chose to play college baseball at Korea University instead of turning into a professional immediately and completely resigned from pitching in order to concentrate on hitting. In August of 1996, Kang was selected to join the South Korea national junior baseball team once more as a pitcher in the World Junior Baseball Championship held in Sancti Spiritus, Cuba.
