Kaija Saariaho is one of the most popular and richest Composer who was born on October 14, 1952 in Helsinki, Uusimaa, Finland. Kaija Annili Saariaho (Finnish: [‘kaija’sa’riaho]; nee Laakkonen born on 14th October, 1952) is a Finnish composer from Paris, France.

She was a student at the University of California, Berkeley in 1982. started working for IRCAM conducting computer-based analysis of the sound spectrum of notes that are produced by various instruments. She devised techniques for computer-assisted composition, played around with music concrete, and composed her first compositions that combined live performance and electronic devices. She also wrote new compositions using the IRCAM CHANT synthesizer. Every single one of the Jardin Secret trilogy was created using computer software. Jardin secret I (1985), Jardin secret II (1986), and Nymphea (Jardin secret III) (1987). Her electronic works were created together along with Jean- Baptiste Barriere, a composer multimedia artist as well as a computer scientist, who supervised the department of music at IRCAM from 1984 to 1987. research from 1984 until 1987. Saariaho and Barriere got married in 1982. They have two kids.

Another example is Six Japanese Gardens (1994), a percussion piece accompanied by a prerecorded electronic layer of the Japanese nature, traditional instruments, and chanting of Buddhist monks. During her visit to Tokyo in 1993, she expanded her original percussion conception into a semi- indeterminate piece. It consists of six movements that each represent a garden composed of traditional Japanese architecture, by which she was inspired rhythmically. Especially in movement IV and V, she explored many possibilities of complex polyrhythm in liberated instrumentation. She said:

On 1 December 2016, the Metropolitan Opera gave its first performance of L’Amour de loin, the first opera by a female composer to be staged by the company since 1903, and the second opera by a female composer ever to be presented at the Metropolitan Opera. The subsequent transmission of the opera to cinema on 10 December 2016 as part of the Metropolitan Opera Live in HD series marked the first opera by a female composer, and the first opera conducted by a female conductor (Susanna Mälkki), in the series.

When she was in Paris, Saariaho developed an accent on slow, gradual transformations of large sound masses. Her first tape work, Vers Le Blanc from 1982, as well as her tape and orchestra work, Verblendungen, are both made up of a single shift that is, in Vers Le Blanc the transition takes place from one pitch cluster to the next, and in Verblendungen the transition is from quiet to loud. Verblendungen is also based on the concept of visual images for its foundation that is a brush stroke, which begins as a thick outline on the page, and then thins into individual strands. Then there is verblendungen, which is the term “verblendungen” itself, which refers to “dazzlements”.

In the year 1980, Saariaho went to the Darmstadt Summer Courses and attended an event by French musicologists Tristan Murail and Gerard Grisey. Being exposed to spectral music for first time was a significant change in the direction of Saariaho’s art. These experiences influenced her decision to take classes in computer music , which were offered by IRCAM the institute for computer music research located in Paris and run with the help of David Wessel, Jean-Baptiste Barriere along with Marc Battier.

Saariaho studied composition in Helsinki, Freiburg, and Paris, where she has lived since 1982. Her research at the Institute for Research and Coordination in Acoustics/Music (IRCAM) marked a turning point in her music away from strict serialism towards spectralism. Her characteristically rich, polyphonic textures are often created by combining live music and electronics.
