He is best known for establishing MetaCreations Corp., his Kai’s Power Tools series of products as well as for his contributions to the field of graphical user interface design.
In February 2005 in February 2005, the “DEMO” conference acknowledged him as one of the top 15 innovators of the past 15 years. Krause has a Master’s Degree at his school, the Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara, California (1996) as well as an honourary doctorate awarded by The University of Essen, Germany (1999). Presently, Krause lives and works in the 1000-year old Rheineck Castle [de] near Bonn in Germany.
The company Kai co-founded, MetaCreations Corp., was initially known in the form of HSC Software, which released the first version of Kai’s Power Tools in 1992. HSC released a follow-up version, along with the initial version of Bryce as well as a variety of other titles before changing their names as MetaTools on the 15th of May, 1995. The name was used until 1997 after which a series of mergers Fractal Design, RayDream, Specular as well as RTG (Real-Time Geometry) required a new name for the growing company: MetaCreations.
