Kannoth Muraleedharan was born Kannoth Karunakaran along with Kannoth Kalyani from Thrissur, Kerala on 14 May 1957. His younger sister is Padmaja Venugopal, who is an active politician. Their family is from Chirakkal, Kannur. After completing his BA at Mar Ivanios College, Trivandrum He was able to obtain his law degree at Kerala Law Academy Law College, Thiruvananthapuram.
In 2005, as it became clear that the Karunakaran section in the Indian National Congress party had disagreements with its leadership along with that of United Democratic Front (UDF) Some people from the UDF left and formed a different party called Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran) (DIC(K)). They joined forces together with Left Democratic Front (LDF) in the panchayat elections in 2005 and enjoyed some results.
Later, Karunakaran rejoined the Congress party, while his son Muraleedharan opted to stay with the NCP, decrying his father’s “betrayal”. Muraleedharan contested the 2009 Lok Sabha polls from the Wayanad constituency under the NCP ticket, but came only in third place, behind the Congress party and the CPI.
In August 2009, he was expelled from the NCP and sacked as state chief of the party, as he openly expressed his desire to rejoin the Congress party. He was subsequently refused re-entry into the Congress party, the party leadership stating that the disparaging comments he had made about the party leadership whilst in opposition were too big a barrier to his re-joining. Muraleedharan pledged that he would “wait for any length of time” for the party to change its mind and readmit him, while his father Karunakaran stated that he would take up the matter with the national leadership of the Congress party, if necessary. He was readmitted to the Congress party in February 2011, and was given a ticket to contest the Assembly election from the Vattiyurkavu Assembly constituency (former Thiruvananthapuram North Constituency). Subsequently, he won his first assembly election after he defeated ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) supported independent candidate Cherian Philip by a margin of over 16,167 votes on 14 May 2011. He was re-elected for the second time in 2016 defeating Kummanam Rajasekharan of Bharatiya Janata Party by a margin of 7622 votes.
In February of 2004, Muraleedharan was appointed as Minister of Power within the A. K. Antony Ministry, even though Muraleedharan was not a member of the Kerala Legislative Assembly. Muraleedharan was required to be elected within six months in order to remain as Minister, but he was defeated in a by- election in Wadakkancherry. Then, he quit in May of the year. He is the sole state minister who never was an MLA, and was never a member of in the assembly.

Kannoth Muraleedharan (born 14 May 1957) is an Indian National Congress politician from Kerala and is the son of the eminent leader of the congress K. Karunakaran. He was elected as a member of the Lok Sabha three times (in 1989 in 1989, 1991, and 1999) in the Kozhikode district, but he resigned this party at the end of 2005. In the past, he joined the NCP from Sharad Pawar. After that, he joined Congress. He was elected the chairman of the KPCC Campaign committee in September 2018. He was elected to the 17th Lok Sabha by winning from the Vatakara during the 2019 general elections.
Muraleedharan began his political career in his own Congress party as an Seva Dal worker. In the following years, he was a Seva Dal worker. positions of District chairman as well as State chief of Kerala Seva Dal. He was elected as a Member of the Parliament for his Calicut (Kozhikode) district in the General Elections of 1989, being re-elected in 1991. In the general election of 1996 the seat was lost to Janata Dal candidate M. P. Veerendra Kumar and was then defeated in his attempt to regain the seat during the 1998 elections, after which he was able to regain the seat in 1999. After that, he was in the post of General Secretary and Vice-President of the Kerala Congress Committee (KPCC) and was elected President of the KPCC from 2001 to 2004.
However, for the Kerala Assembly elections of 2006, DIC(K) made a pact with UDF as LDF declined to make any electoral arrangements with DIC(K). DIC(K) contested in 17 constituencies but managed to get elected only from one seat mostly because of grassroots level cross-voting by Congress. Muralidharan lost the election in Koduvally constituency to P.T.A. Rahim.
