The second child of three Jung Ryeo-won was born in the year 1981 and moved from Brisbane, Australia in 1992 with her family. There was discrimination in her the elementary school system, making her determined to improve her proficiency in English. When she was in junior high school she was accustomed to the Australian style of living. After graduation at MacGregor State School of Education, she graduated at Griffith University with a major in international business.

After having to endure 11 unsuccessful auditions the previous year, she admitted she was unsure about her choice to become an actress. She earned recognition for her role in the popular vampire-themed sitcom Hello Franceska, then made her name on the show romantic comedy My Name Is Kim Sam-soon. The show was a huge success, with an average rating of more than 37% and 50.5 percent for the final. Jung was praised for her portrayal of a fragile but good-natured character who fights for the hero’s love, and eventually became one of the few successful singer-turned-actresses in the country.
