In the 2013-14 season, Mertine took home his national French championships after beating successively Enzo Lefort, and Erwann Le Pechoux. In the European Championships in Strasbourg he was defeated 14-15 in the 16-team table against Alexander Choupenitch of the Czech Republic. In the team competition, France beat Italy and the Czech Republic and Italy before triumphing over Italy and allowing Mertine to take home the first medal of gold at an important event. The World Championships in Kazan he was defeated 13-15 in the preliminary table of 64 by Israel’s Tomer Or after leading 13-7. In the team competition France beat Russia at the quarterfinals, and followed it up with a crushing win over China to win the title of the world champion.
In the 2012-13 season he won a bronze medal at the Seoul World Cup and in the Tokyo Grand Prix, but gave it the trophy to Belarus’ Siarhei Byk in the opening stage of the European Championships in Zagreb. In the team competition, France was overcome by Great Britain in the first round. The World Championships in Budapest Mertine defeated Great Britain’s Richard Kruse in the first round, but was defeated by Heo Jun from South Korea. He was substituted in the team competition in the team event by Enzo Lefort. He ended the season No.19 which was his highest ranking at the time of his 2014 season.

Mertine started fencing at five, along with his father who was an instructor in fencing who was a trainer for World Champion Victor Sintes. At the age of 18, he joined the center that was designed for young fencing athletes in Chatenay-Malabry. He was awarded a bronze team award at the 2007 Junior European Championships in Prag as well as at the 2008 Junior World Championships in Acireale. In 2009, he was admitted to INSEP an institution run by the state that focuses on high-performance athletes.
Mertine was able to climb his very first World Cup podium with a bronze medal at Copenhague and was then chosen for the France national team as reserve. The first time he played for the national team was the 2011 Challenge International in Paris, where France came in 5th place. In the rankings of the world, 117th, Mertine took home his place in the Havana World Cup that same season, after beating Italian Giorgio Avola in the final.
