She took home WTA Tour singles titles in Auckland and Birmingham and finished second on three occasions. Halard was also runner-up in Tokyo’s Princess Cup in October and won the doubles title with Ai Sugiyama. The following week, she won both the singles and doubles titles at the Japan Open in Tokyo, saving three match points in the final to defeat the defending champion Amy Frazier.

She had her best year in 1996 in which she took her very first WTA Tour Tier II singles title in Paris and ended her year in a record-setting singles rank at the end of the season, which was No. 15 and was the world’s number. one singles player in France. It was the case in spite of the fact her schedule during the second half of 1996 was halted due to injuries to her wrist that occurred during an Fed Cup semifinal match against Spain.
