Julie Doiron (born June 28 in 1972, in Moncton, New Brunswick) is a Canadian musician and singer of Acadian origins. The singer-songwriter has also been the co-vocalist and bass guitarist of The Canadian indie rock group Eric’s Trip since its formation in the year 1990. She has released ten albums of her own starting with the album Broken Girl in 1996. Broken Girl, and is also the lead vocalist for the group Julie and the Wrong Guys.
Her album”Woke Myself Up” was nominated in 2007 for the Polaris Music Prize.
In 2009, Doiron told a reporter from The Strand, a college newspaper at the University of Toronto, that she and Chad VanGaalen were exploring the possibility of collaborating on an album. She appeared on a track from VanGaalen’s EP of Soft Airplane B-sides that year, but no further news pertaining to a potential album collaboration has been released.
Over the three-year period between I Can Wonder and her 2012 album So Many Days, Doiron moved several times, residing at different times in Montreal, Toronto and Sackville. While living in Toronto, she had difficulty making ends meet due to the city’s high cost of living, and began teaching yoga classes, and performing a weekly residency at the Saving Gigi club, to help pay the bills. By the time So Many Days was released in the fall of 2012, she had moved back to Sackville.
Eric’s Trip came together in 2001, and have performed shows on a regular basis since then. She has also been an extra musician for albums released by The Tragically Hip (2000s Music at Work), Gordon Downie (2001’s Coke Machine Glow and The 2003’s Battle of the Nudes and the 2010 album The Grand Bounce), and Herman Dune. In 2006 she assisted in the creation of SappyFest along with Paul Henderson and Jon Claytor as an extension of Sappy Records. She released a split release that is co-credited to the alternative country group Okkervil River, and collaborated with Frederick Squire and American musician Phil Elverum on the 2008 Mount Eerie album Lost Wisdom. She was part of the Indie rock band Shotgun & Jaybird until their end in 2007. Also, she played the drums as part an unintentional duo together with Fred Squire. At first, they were referred to as “Blue Heeler”, they changed their name to “Calm Down Its Monday” and then released an EP split in seven” EP through K Records, with two solo Doiron songs on the reverse side.

Doiron began playing guitar (later changing her focus to the bass) as a member of Eric’s Trip at 18 years old, after joining the group at the request of her boyfriend Eric’s Trip guitarist Rick White. Just prior to the break-up of the group in 1996 she released a solo album under the name of Broken Girl following two prior Seven” EPs (“Dog Love Pt. 2” and “Nora”) as well as a single under the same name. The majority of her later music has come out under her name. She founded an independent label called Sappy Records, to release a variety of her solo albums. Although the majority of her solo music was composed as well as performed in English she has recorded an album in French songs in French, Desormais, as well as several EPs featuring songs in Spanish.
The year 1999 was the first time Doiron was a performer at 1999’s Stardust Picnic festival at Historic Fort York, Toronto. The following year, she recorded an album in conjunction with the Ottawa group Wooden Stars, which was the first time she performed with a group after Eric’s Trip. She was awarded with them a Juno Award for Julie Doiron as well as The Wooden Stars in March 2000.
During the tour to support the 2009 album I Can Wonder What You Did with Your Day, the mayor of Bruno, Saskatchewan proclaimed June 7, 2009 as “Julie Doiron Day”. Doiron performed at the local All Citizens arts centre on that day.
