The particular interest of Wagstaff to German history, specifically the past that shaped the then German Democratic Republic and the German Democratic Republic, is evident by Treptow with strings orchestra (2005) one of his most popular work. The composition, which received the Emre Araci Prize in the year

2005. Emre Araci Prize was an inspiration for his visit to the Soviet War Memorial in Treptow Park in eastern Berlin.

In 2011, Wagstaff was commissioned by the Royal Society of Chemistry to compose a new work to celebrate International Year of Chemistry 2011. The trio for clarinet, cello and piano is entitled A Persistent Illusion and was premiered by Hebrides Ensemble on 12 December 2011.

In 2013, the composer was commissioned by the University of Edinburgh to write and produce a short opera to celebrate the Tercentenary of its School of Chemistry which fell that year. The resulting work, entitled Breathe Freely, is set during the Second World War and premiered in the Assembly Rooms (Edinburgh) on 24 October 2013 in a production supported by Scottish Opera. A CD recording of the opera was released on the Linn Records label in October 2015.

The composer came to the attention of the public through his musical John Paul Jones (2001) that was based on the story of the Scots-born seaman as well as hero from his time during the American Revolution. The premiere was held at Edinburgh the year 2001 it is the very first one of Wagstaff’s work to be viewed by a large public. The composer’s unique style of composition (which often involves the integration of many different styles into one piece) was beginning to show up. John Paul Jones was revived as a concert performance in 2010, in collaboration together with The Scottish Chamber Orchestra.

born in Edinburgh, Wagstaff originally studied German political and language after which he graduated from University of Reading in 1993. Wagstaff was an interpreter and translator for the German language before pursuing music as an occupation in the latter part of the 1990s. His love of the history of language and politics continues to be evident in his songs as well as in his libretti for theatre.

The composer began his studies in music composition in the University of Edinburgh with Professor Nigel Osborne in 2001, getting a master’s from the music department in 2002. He also earned the doctorate degree in 2008.

In August 2007, Wagstaff presented his hour-long chamber opera The Turing Test on the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The opera takes its name from the test proposed by the English mathematician Alan Turing for human level intelligence in a machine. A recording of his Piano Quintet was released in the same year on an album by the Edinburgh Quartet recorded by Calum Malcolm entitled Frontiers and Bridges.
