Cohen was raised in Philadelphia and began playing tennis when she was just three. Her father Cohen, the Dr. Richard Cohen, played tennis for the University of Pennsylvania and played professional tennis for two years as did her brother Josh. Josh played All-American tennis from the University of Miami and became the head director for the World Team Tennis Philadelphia Freedoms. When she was just six years old, she was placed at no. one in doubles for 18 and under in the USTA Middle States region (including Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware). In 1997 at age eight she was the youngest tennis player to be the winner of an adult match at the Middle States Tennis Association tournament. She then became in the position of US tennis champion for the 9 and under division.
The year 2001 was the time she took home in 2001 the USTA National Spring Championships 12-Under Division Championship. In 2006 she was the most highly- ranked American tennis player for girls. In the same year, she along with teammate Kimberly Couts reached the quarterfinals in doubles at the Wimbledon Junior Championships.
