Jules Maaten (born 17 April 1961 in Nieuwer-Amstel) is a Dutch politician, and as of August 2016, Regional Director for sub-Saharan Africa of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom (FNF) which is based in Johannesburg. Before that, he served as the FNF director of the country in the Philippines (2010-2016) He was a supporter of initiatives to promote good governance and human rights, as well as free trade, and an “It’s all about Freedom”-project that also includes the every year Freedom Run against corruption.
Jules Maaten was elected as an official membre of the European Parliament in the European Elections on June 10, 1999. He was on the electoral lists from VVD, the Dutch Liberal Party VVD and Maaten was elected to his fellow members of the Liberal Group in the Parliament. He was a member of the Committee for the Environment, Public Health and Consumer Affairs and, since 2002 in 2002, on the Foreign Affairs Committee. In the initial phase of the legislative session, he was on the Economic and Monetary Committee. He was a legislator regarding issues like for instance the Tobacco Directive, the introduction of the euro currency the quality of water, AIDS, completion of the internal market of the EU in alcohol as well as international banking charges as well as for instance, the European Central Bank, safety of children’s toys, automobile emission, safety of food Genetically engineered organisms as well as human genetics, pharmaceutical and homeopathic items, Dutch prisoners in Thailand.

He began his political career in 1979, working as the Personal Assistant to an MP in the Netherlands (1979-1981) as well as a member and chairman of the European Youth Policy group of the Dutch International Youth Council, where Dutch youth organizations were discussing their perspectives regarding what the future holds for European unification. In the year following, Jules Maaten became national Board member from JOVD, the Dutch Young Liberals JOVD (1980-1984) and, in 1981, became a member of the IFLRY board in 1981. IFLRY. Prior to this (1986-1991) the politician was a city councillor in his home town of Amstelveen close to Amsterdam which was responsible for public finance education as well as social issues. As the president of the World Union of Liberal IFLRY (1983-1989) He was involved in issues related to disarmament and east-west cooperation.
From 1999-2009 he was a Member of the European Parliament for the Dutch People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (Volkspartij voor Vrijheid en Democratie), Member of the Bureau of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe and sat on the European Parliament’s Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety. He was a substitute for the Committee on Constitutional Affairs and the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs. He was also a member of the Delegation for relations with the countries of Southeast Asia and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
