Playfair has studied teaching and arts in The University of Sydney. she taught PE as well as HSIE in a variety of high-quality public schools in Sydney and, in 2003, became the assistant principal at Canterbury Girls High School. She left teaching in 2009 and later was employed as a professor at The University of Sydney.
She competed in her Australian National titles with an injury. She was not picked in an Australian squad for the Commonwealth Games squad at which the point when she stopped competitive swimming.

Playfair started swimming at the age of four in Watson’s Bay Baths and continued to swim there two to three times a day starting at an young age. From 1965 until 1969, her name was listed as the New South Wales Junior and Senior Breaststroke champion as well as record champion and record holder. The champion was also one of the Australian 200m as well as 100m breaststroke champion from the year 1967 until 1969. She also had the Australian and Commonwealth records.
In the year 1968, she was 14 years old, she was selected to represent Australia in the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. Playfair was joined by Janet Steinbeck, Lyn McClements and Lynne Watson to claim silver in the 4×100-metre medley relay losing to those Americans in the final by 1.7 seconds. She was eliminated from the semi-finals and heats of the 200-metre and 100-metre backstroke events, respectively. She was away from her home and school for three months, and celebrated her 15th birthday in the country.
