Salas is well-known for having been transformed from third base play to pitching in the Devil Rays’ minor league system. Salas began his career as a pitcher during the 2004 season. He recorded a 1-0 record with a 4.82 ERA for the Rookie-Level Princeton Devil Rays. He split his 2005 season with the high-A Visalia Oaks and the Double-A Montgomery Biscuits.

He made eight appearances for Tampa Bay in the 2006 season, and was awarded an opportunity to be on the roster for Spring Training with the Devil Rays in 2007. In 2007, he went 1-1 with a 3.95 ERA in 12 games and was suspended in May for 50 games for using performance-enhancing drugs. In order to fill his spot on the roster they Devil Rays recalled Tim Corcoran from Durham.
