In 2007 and until the time of his retirement, Sarriegi was the representative of Panathinaikos from Greece.
With just two league games for another Basque team, Athletic Bilbao, in 2006-07, Sarriegi signed with the Greek club Panathinaikos F.C. at the end of August 2007. In November, the next year, he scored a winning goal in the Athens club when it beat Inter Milan 1-0 at the San Siro, in a UEFA Champions League group stage match.

Sarriegi was born in Lazkao, Gipuzkoa. After playing his first professional game for amateur and modest Basque club, the player joined with Deportivo Alaves in 1999, making his debut for the team on the 18th of February with a 1-0 win away over CA Osasuna.
After a short-term loan with neighbors SD Eibar in the second division, Sarriegi renewed his contract for another three years. He played 28 times in the 2004-05 season when Alaves were relegated back to La Liga after two years of absence. In the subsequent season, Sarriegi was the first choice, however his team was then relegated.
On 9 July 2010, after appearing regularly during three years, the 31-year-old Sarriegi extended his contract for a further two seasons. The following year, after the departures of Djibril Cissé and Gilberto Silva, he was voted by his teammates as the new captain.
