Josu Ortuondo began to take his first steps in football at the Athletic Club youth academy. On September 14, 1969 he made his debut in the First Division in a 2–0 victory against RCD Mallorca . He campaigned four seasons as a right winger at Athletic Bilbao. After finishing his time at the Bilbao club, he played for one season at CD Logroñés, six seasons at Real Oviedo . He also played for Atlético Español, Lorca and Córdoba, where he retired in 1984.
