Breakstone was introduced to the business of music early in his the life of his siblings and parents. The sister of his was a lighting tech in the Fillmore East theater, where there were musicians like Jimi Hendrix and Frank Zappa. Then, he began to become attracted to jazz and was inspired through Charlie Parker and Lee Morgan. He was a student of the guitarist Sal Salvador in Manhattan.
