West was a student at Yale University for his undergraduate degree with a major in geology and international studies. At Yale West, he was taught rowing under the guidance of Freshman Head Coach Justin Moore and Varsity Coach Dave Vogel. He took part in the four-mile (6.4 kilometers) Varsity Eights version of the Harvard-Yale Boat Race in his junior season (1998) but was unable to beat Harvard. In his undergraduate years, the athlete was a part of the literary society St. Anthony Hall. He was an 1997 Marshall Scholar.
As of 1999 West went to Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge for postgraduate studies as an Marshall Scholar, and simultaneously received a place for The Blue Boat for The Boat Race against Oxford University. The Cambridge Blue Boat was his home. Blue Boat every year until 2002, West and the “Light Blues” beat Oxford’s “Dark Blues” twice in the span of four years (1999 and 2001). in 2000, West took on his former Yale teammates Alexander Reid and Eirik Lilledahl who were the two stern members of the winning Oxford team. At 6 feet 9.5 inches (2.070 metres), West is the tallest known oarsman on The Boat Race. He also twice took home the May Bumps headships in the Caius The Boat Club.
West’s most recent success came in the Eight rowing for Great Britain at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China, where the British crew picked up a silver medal in a close finish behind the Canadians.
