Rodota served as an advisor in the candidate Pete Wilson, who defeated Dianne Feinstein to be elected the Governor of California. In the early part of 1993 Rodota became the Cabinet Secretary of Governor Wilson who was responsible for the coordination of policies and administrative actions of the eleven cabinet agencies as well as that of the Washington, DC office of the State of California. After Wilson’s reelection , in 1994 Rodota appointed Deputy Chief Of Staff. In the days following Arnold Schwarzenegger announced on the Jay Leno Show that he would be running as Governor for California, Rodota was named director of policy for the campaign. He headed the policy development team, which later was renamed Schwarzenegger University. He was an Schwarzenegger appointed member of the Little Hoover Commission and as an advisor to Schwarzenegger’s election campaign.

After graduating of Stanford University, Rodota was an intern at the Washington office of U.S. Rep. Donald H. Clausen and later was appointed to the staff that was part of the U.S. Senate Republican Policy Committee which was headed by Senator. John Tower. Rodota was then assigned to the U.S. Department of Education as an assistant special in the office of the Assistant Secretary for Legislative Affairs. Following the 1984 elections, Rodota worked briefly in the U.S. Departments of Housing and Urban Development as well as Department of Energy and Housing. U.S. Department of Energy prior to being appointed as deputy director of public affairs at the White House, where he was in office until 1988. He was policy director for the Bush-Quayle California campaign, which was the last election that the Republican presidential candidate won the popular voter turnout in California.

In 2008, Rodota was one of a small number of bipartisan political operatives who volunteered in the closing days on the campaign against Prop. 8, the California initiative banning same-sex marriage. Rodota set up and ran the campaign’s “war room” and rapid-response efforts. Rodota later joined the Mehlman brief in support of gay marriage in Obergefell v. Hodges.
