Joseph Phuong Nguyen (born March 25 1957) is a Canadian prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. On June 1, 2016, Nguyen became the Bishop-elect of the Diocese of Kamloops. In the past, Nguyen was in the position of Vicar General of Vancouver’s Archdiocese of Vancouver, second to Archbishop Miller.
Nguyen was aware that there was no possibility of being ordained as a pastor in Vietnam and he secretly tried to flee Vietnam and even risked his life during the process. He was detained and imprisoned by the governmentand was subjected to malnutrition and torture at the brutality of his captors. He was released, but was after being injured in an accident and was in a coma during several weeks within the Philippines. He travelled to Canada after the war as an asylum seeker. There, he was studying English as an additional language, later being accepted into the Seminary of Christ the King in Mission.
