Before his success as a writer He worked as a journalist for The Sunday Tribune newspaper and Esquire magazine. He is a frequent writer for Raidio Teilifis Eireann (RTE) and is a member of the Irish artist’s association Aosdana.
O’Connor’s latest book, Shadowplay, published in 2019, has been shortlisted for the 2019 Costa book prize in the Novel category.
The year 2002 was the time he published the book Star of the Sea, which The Economist listed as one among the top novels of 2003. The 2010 novel, Ghost Light is loosely inspired by the life of actress Maire O’Neill who was born Mary “Molly” Allgood, and her relationship with Irish writer John Millington Synge. The novel is published by Harvill Secker from London in the year 2010.
