Joseph Jude Tyson (born October 16 1957) is an American prelate of the Roman Catholic Church who is currently the Bishop (Catholic Church) of the Diocese of Yakima, Washington. He was the assistant bishop for the Archdiocese of Seattle from 2005-2011.
In 2007 Tyson participated in an state legislative hearing about an upcoming Washington initiative to provide domestic partnership benefits for same-sex couples. He also advocated expanding the scope of its benefits and a controversial approach employed elsewhere in members of the Catholic Church, extending the definition of partnerships to relationships other than those between married couples to stop discrimination against a parent who is elderly or a housemate, sibling or other resident, and limiting its potential positive impact on gay rights as per the Catholic church’s longstanding policy.
On April 12, 2011, Tyson was appointed the seventh bishop of the Diocese of Yakima in Washington State, replacing Carlos Arthur Sevilla, S.J., who served as bishop from 1996 until his retirement in 2011. Tyson was installed as bishop of the Diocese of Yakima on May 31, 2011, at Holy Family Parish in Yakima.
In May of 2005 Tyson was named Auxiliary Bishop of Seattle as well as Titular Bishop for Migirpa through Pope Benedict XVI. Tyson received his episcopal consecration on June 6, 2005, by the Archbishop Alexander Brunett, with Bishops George Thomas and Gustavo Garcia-Siller, M.Sp.S., serving as co- consecrators. The bishop chose as the motto of his episcopal office: “Christo Lumen ad Gentes.”

Joseph Tyson was born in Moses Lake, Washington, and was a student at Blessed Sacrament School. The school he attended graduated St. Alphonsus Elementary School in 1971, and Bishop Blanchet High School in 1975. He continued his studies at Shoreline Community College and the University of Washington, from which he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from the departments of Russian as well as Eastern European Area Studies and editorial journalism in the year 1980. He was awarded a master’s degree of international relations in the Jackson School of International Studies in 1984. He also earned the Master of Divinity degree at The Theological College of the Catholic University of America in 1989.
Tyson was inducted into the priesthood on the 10th of June 1989, by the Archbishop Raymond Hunthausen. Tyson then served as vicar of parochial churches in St. James Cathedral (1991-93) as well as director of St. Mary of the Valley Parish in Monroe (1993-96) as well as the pastor of St. Edward, St. George and St. Paul parishes located in South Seattle (1996-2005). Additionally, he has been a consultant to with chancery offices in the areas of permanent deacon training as well as the seminarians’ experiences in parish, vocations and communications.
He became interim superintendent of Seattle Catholic schools on July 1, 2008. He is a devoted cyclist, even receiving news of his episcopal appointment while riding his bike. In addition to his native English, he speaks Spanish, German, Vietnamese, and Serbo-Croatian.
