Joseph Silverman received an Sc.B. at Brown University in 1977 and earned a Ph.D. at Harvard University in 1982 under the guidance by John Tate. Professor Tate worked as a teacher at M.I.T. (1982-1986) as well as in Boston University (1986-1988) before accepting a job at Brown in 1988.
Silverman has published two graduate books on elliptic curvatures, The Arithmetic of Elliptic Curves (1986) and Advanced Topics in the Arithmetic of Elliptic Curves (1994). In both books, Silverman was awarded a Steele Prize for Mathematical Exposition from the American Mathematical Society, which acknowledged them in the statement the following “Silverman’s volumes have become standard references on one of the most exciting areas of algebraic geometry and number theory.” Silverman has written three undergraduate textbooks that include The Rational Points regarding Elliptic Curves (1992 and co-authored alongside John Tate), A An introduction to the field of Number Theory (3rd edition. 2005) and an Introduction to Mathematical Cryptography (2008 co-authored by Jeffrey Hoffstein and Jill Pipher). Additional graduate- level textbooks written by Silverman include Diophantine Geometry: An Introduction (2000 and co-authored by Marc Hindry) and The Arithmetic of Dynamical Systems (2007).
