Hasten (February 25 1952 – 1 November January 1, 2011) was the president and CEO of ShoreBank America’s first and largest community development and environmental bank that was founded by the city of Chicago, Illinois and named one of the 45 Social Entrepreneurs That Are Transforming the world in 2008. Hasten directed ShoreBank’s socially accountable investment in the less-served urban areas in Chicago, Illinois; Cleveland, Ohio; and Detroit, Michigan. Prior to that, Hasten was the vice- chairman of U.S. Bancorp.

Hasten passed away from pancreatic cancer on the 1st of November in 2011. In his memory his family has established an organization called the JEH Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research.

Hasten joined ShoreBank as CEO in May 2007. Then, Hasten and ShoreBank mounted an initiative to provide refinancing for mortgages to many among those 10000 South Side, Chicago homeowners who were identified by ShoreBank as at risk loss of homes due to foreclosure. The program was dubbed”the Rescue Loan Program, ShoreBanks efforts were at the forefront of the subprime mortgage crisis. It has become a model for helping homeowners who were at chance of defaulting due to the risk of predatory loans by giving them the chance to refinance their mortgages into fixed mortgages at affordable rates. The program received national attention and was featured in The News Hour with Jim Lehrer as well as on the Nightly Business Report on PBS. And Fast Company and the Monitor Group awarded a 2007 Social Capitalist Award and named ShoreBank one of the 45 Social Entrepreneurs who are changing the World in 2008. Hasten has been replaced George Surgeon as CEO in November 2009

Hasten earned his B.A. in 1974 at Fairfield University located in Fairfield, Connecticut and M.B.A. in 1978 from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois.

Hasten started his career in banking as a trainee at the old American National Bank in 1975. From 1984 until 1991, Hasten was the head of his own Midwest United States operations of the Standard Chartered Bank, and between 1991 and 1995, was the bank’s chief executive officer for its South Korean and Indonesian operations. Hasten was a part of the former Mercantile Bancorporation in 1995 as president of the St. Louis, Missouri bank, which was its primary bank, and also of the its corporate banking system across the globe. He was appointed vice-chairman in 1999 of all wholesale banking, when The former Firstar Corporation took over Mercantile and took over corporate banking through U.S. Bank after it joined with Firstar on February 1, 2001. He was vice-chairman for U.S. Bancorp until August 2005.
