When Lyn McLeod announced her resignation in 1996 as Liberal chief in June of 1996 Cordiano declared his intention to run for her position. At beginning, people believed that he was the top contender to leading candidate Gerard Kennedy, who was thought to represent an apex of left-wing politics within the Liberal Party. Cordiano however was viewed by many as the representative of the party’s establishment, while also having left-wing views.

The Liberals won the provincial election of 2003, and Cordiano won another easy victory in York South—Weston. On October 23, 2003, Cordiano was named Minister for Economic Development and Trade.

Cordiano resigned from the cabinet and the legislature on September 18, 2006, citing a desire to spend more time with his family.

The first leadership convention took place on November 26, 1996. Cordiano was second to Kennedy in the initial ballot but was not able to consolidate his position during the subsequent rounds. Dalton McGuinty tied him for second on the third round and then surpassed his opponent on the 4th. Cordiano stood with McGuinty on the fifth vote and was thus largely the reason for McGuinty’s victory over Kennedy for the leadership position of the party. Cordiano was then appointed the Deputy Leader of the Opposition and held the post until 1998. His replacement was Gerry Phillips as Deputy Leader caused some to be angry within the province’s Italian community.

Cordiano has been elected into the Ontario legislature at the provincial election in 1985 He defeated the incumbent New Democrat Odoardo Di Santo by 221 votes in the Toronto riding of Downsview. Cordiano was re-elected by more votes in the redistributed electoral district in Lawrence in the 1987 provincial election. He was the an assistant to the ministers in various positions.

The Liberals were stung by the NDP during the 1990 provincial election and Cordiano had to face a formidable opposition by NDP Candidate Shalom Schachter. He won with the margin of 11,786 votes against 10,179. Cordiano then became an important spokesperson for provincial Liberal Party within Toronto. The 1995 provincial election was a success. Cordiano gain his riding with a large marginthe province’s swing was in the direction of his Progressive Conservative Party, but the PCs didn’t have enough support from Lawrence to really compete in the race for the seat.

Cordiano and Kennedy were again rivals in the provincial election of 1999, this time for the Liberal nomination in the redistributed riding of York South—Weston. Kennedy was convinced by the party leadership to run elsewhere, and Cordiano won an easy victory in the election which followed. The Progressive Conservatives were re-elected in the general election, however, and Cordiano remained on the opposition benches. In 2000, he was appointed opposition critic for financial institutions.
