He is the cousin of the trombonist Lester Bowie, Joseph is well-known for his jazz-punk band Defunkt as well as for his participation in the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble.

In 2014, he released Sax Pistols Allergy for the U.S (ZIP Records) with the lyricist Hilarius Hofstede, along with the musicians Yuri Honing, Luc Houtcamp, Chazzy Green, Bart Wirtz, Koen Schouten, James White and Defunkt rhythm section composed of Kim Clarke, Tobias Ralph as well as Rocco Zifarelli. In 2009, he recorded Defunkt Mastervolt, a Paris-based band featuring Linley Marthe Rocco Zifarelli Emma Lamadji, Michael Lecoq, and Jon Grandcamp. The album was released in the year 2015 by ZIP Records.

After returning in New York City in 1978 Defunkt began his singing career in a band called funk and punk singer James Chance and the Contortions. Defunkt was born at the same period. In the following twenty-five years Defunkt released 15 studio albums. Bowie has worked with Jean-Paul Bourelly as well as Jamaaladeen Tacuma. He has played “big band funk” arrangements together with Ed Partyka at Music School Lucerne, Barbary Coast Ensemble at Dartmouth College, JazzArt Orchestra as well as The HR Frankfurt Radio Big Band. The very first Defunkt Big Band debuted in 1999 in New York City at the Texaco Jazz Festival sponsored by the Knitting Factory.
