After the law university, Mussomeli spent some years working in the field of law in the capacity of Attorney General Deputy for New Jersey, before entering the US Foreign Service in September 1980. His first overseas assignment was Cairo, Egypt, as an officer in the general service (GSO). Following that, he went back in Washington, D.C., where he was employed by the Department of State as staff assistant to the Undersecretary of Security Assistance. Another overseas trip was to Manila, Philippines, as consular officer between 1984 and 1986 in which the following year he returned in 2002 as Deputy Chief Mission (DCM). Prior to that however, his assignments were: North Korea Desk Officer (1986-1988) as well as senior watch officer (1989-1990) Economic Counselor for Colombo, Sri Lanka, (1990-1992) as well as inspector for the office of Inspector General (1992-1994) political counsellor at Rabat, Morocco (1995-1998) as Director of Mission Deputy for Manama, Bahrain (1998-2001) as well as as a participant of the Senior Seminar (2001-2002). In his second trip to the Philippines as DCM and Deputy Chief of Mission, he was Charge d’affaires for one year during the time that ambassador Frank Ricciardone, was absent. On the 24th of June 2005 his confirmation was approved by the United States Senate was able to confirm the appointment of him as the U.S. Ambassador for Cambodia. Joseph Adamo Mussomeli (born May 26 1952) was an employee of the United States Department of State and was his former U.S. ambassador to both The Republic of Slovenia and the Kingdom of Cambodia.

When he was in high school the family was settled at Cherry Hill, New Jersey. He was a graduate of Camden Catholic High School in 1970. He went on up to Rutgers University for two years before taking a break to travel on a hitchhike throughout Europe. When he returned in his home in the United States, he attended Trenton State College (now The College of New Jersey) and graduated with a summa cum laude in 1975. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in political Science. The following year, he was awarded an Juris Doctor diploma from the Rutgers School of Law, Newark.

During his service as Ambassador to Slovenia, he was involved in some controversies. After 2011 elections he offered his help in forming government coalition, for which he was criticised by then President of Slovenia Danilo Türk. He also stated that Slovenia gained its independence too easily and that there were not enough victims in the Slovenian War for Independence. Later he criticised Türk’s candidature for the UN Secretary-General and said he divides Slovenian people for which he was called to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for consultations.
