Sorial was a religious person from an early age and was raised with a strict Orthodox education. When Sorial finished his bachelor’s program in chemical engineering at the Khartoum University Sorial emigrated to France to pursue a doctoral degree in Toulouse’s University of Toulouse.
In 1998, Bishop Karas had been diagnosed with cancer of the lung. He had nine months left to live. The bishop continued to attend Mass, especially the Divine Liturgy, followed the routine fasting schedule, and led an ascetic lifestyle. He was regularly visited by guests, even when chemotherapy was being administered to him. On January 10, 2002 Bishop Karas had an attack of the brain and was rushed into a coma. He died in the early hours on the 17th of January. It was the day prior to turning 47.
The Metropolitans and Bishops from the Holy Synod of the Coptic Orthodox Church unanimously approved the promotion to the rank of Father Karas as Bishop and Abbot to recognize the monastic’s growth He was ordained Bishop on July 6, 1993 in the presence of Pope Shenouda III.

On January 18, 1981, he tried to enter the monastery of Saint Bishoy but was blocked by the Abbot Bishop Sarabamoun. The bishop advised the monk to go back to France for further studies. Sorial responded, “No one, having put his hand on the plough can look back.” (Luke 9:62) The Abbot then permitted him to go in. The 14th of November, 1981 Sorial was ordained as a monk and was given the title of Father Karas. Pope Shenouda III ordained him as priest on the 14th of February 1984. He then appointed him the responsibility of heading his own Papal Center in St. Bishoy Monastery. On the 23rd of May, 1989 Pope Shenouda elevated Father Karas to the rank of Hegumen.
Hegumen Karas was appointed as the head of the monastery that is now named St. Antony the Great in Newberry Springs, California (near Barstow, California) on 26 September 1989.
