Craig was named Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2013 New Year Honours for services to swimming.
Craig was a member of his school, the City of Sunderland Amateur Swimming Club. In 2012, he smashed five personal records at the Paralympic trials for the 2012 Games in London and followed that up with the first British medal by winning the bronze medal in the 100-meter freestyle race at the 2012 British Swimming Championships. The following year during the British International Disability Championships, Craig improved upon his personal best, and took the 100-meter freestyle for youth title. The same competition saw Craig was awarded gold in the youth men’s 50 m race, with the time of 29.95s with bronze medals in the open men’s 400 m race.

Josef Isaac Craig, MBE (born on February 17, 1997) is a retired British Paralympic swimmer. Craig was a participant at S8 events and was selected to compete in the 2012 Summer Paralympics and won gold in the world record time in the 400m men’s freestyle race.
Craig’s performance in 2012 were enough to get him chosen to compete in Craig’s selection for the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London. Craig was chosen for four events: the 50 m freestyle and 100 freestyle, and his favorite 400 m freestyle. All within the S7 class. Craig was able to qualify at the end of the 50 m freestyle in the time of 29.48 seconds. He then cut about a tenth second off to finish 7th. Craig also made it from the heats of the 100m event and finished fourth with an average of 1:04.00. In the final, he finished in the middle of the podium with a 4th place finish and the timing of 1:02.20. In his final race in the 400m freestyle, Craig set a new world record of 4:45.79 to claim the fastest qualifying spot during his morning heat. In the finals in the afternoon Craig clocked a time of 4:42.81 to surpass his world record earlier in the day. He was able to be the first to take home the gold, the first Paralympic medal and making him the youngest gold medal winner of 2012. To celebrate his gold medal, Royal Mail painted a post box in gold, which was his home town in Jarrow, Tyne and Wear and issued an first class stamp that featured the image of him. In recognition of Craig’s success, he was with Kat Copeland for an award called the North East Sport Personality of the Year award together with Olympian rower Kat Copeland in December 2012. On 16 the 16th of December Craig received the title of Young Sports Personality of the Year in 2012 by the BBC’s annual main award.
Initially classified as a S7 swimmer, Craig was reclassified in April 2014 as S8. His previous achievements continued to stand, but it meant that Craig would now compete in future events with swimmers deemed to have more mobility. His first major tournament after being reclassified was the 2014 IPC Swimming European Championships, where he claimed three bronze medals, an achievement that Craig was pleased with.
