born in Elgoibar, Gipuzkoa, Etxeberria began his career at Real Sociedad, making his La Liga debut at only 17 years old in the 2-0 win at home over RCD Espanol on 29 January 1995. The following summer, he transferred to the neighbouring Athletic Bilbao in a controversial move that cost more than EUR3 million, which caused the two clubs to cut off formal relationships.
