Alves was the subject of a lot of attention the 31st of December, 2016 when Alves signed a professional try-out contract to act as a backup goalie for the Hurricanes during their game later that same day because of Eddie Lack’s illness. As a the backup goalie, Alves engaged in his regular duties as an equipment manager, which included sharpening skates and tapering sticks. After an opponent like the Hurricanes falling 3-1 in the match against Tampa Bay Lightning Tampa Bay Lightning and the Lightning having frozen the puck towards the end of the match, Hurricanes manager Bill Peters put Alves in the net to replace the goalie who was in charge Cam Ward for the final minutes of the game. Alves was not a target in his first appearance. At 37 Alves became one of the longest-running players in NHL history to make their debut and after 7.6 second of playing time, Alves achieved the second fastest debut in NHL history and was just ahead of Kellan Lain, who recorded his debut at two seconds in the year 2014. Alves also set records for the shortest debut in NHL history. Alves established records for the fastest debut of goalie, and also the fastest NHL career, beating each of Robbie Irons and Christian Soucy who both had three minutes of action in the course of their NHL careers.

Alves had a career in professional soccer with his club, the Greenville Grrrowl, South Carolina Stingrays, Charlotte Checkers and Pensacola Ice Pilots of the ECHL and Asheville Aces of the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL). He played nine games in the two leagues between 2004 and 2007.
