Schmidt was born in Duluth, Minnesota. He was drawn to music at an early age, picking up the guitar when he was 10 years old, and began recording local artists at the age of 16. In 2006, Schmidt moved to College Park, Maryland, and took a job as Matt Squire’s assistant. After working with Matt, he moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he recorded bands such as Motion City Soundtrack, Quietdrive, Sing It Loud, You, Me, and Everyone We Know, Jamestown Story, Paradise Fears, Take Cover, and The Role Call.
