Romano was a student at Father Michael McGivney’s Catholic Academy in his hometown located in Markham, Ontario. He was a standout athlete and was a letterman in basketball, baseball soccer, volleyball, and baseball. In high school, he was not drafted He then enrolled at Connors State College. In his debut season with Connors State, Romano pitched to a win-loss record of 0-1, 8.68 earned run average (ERA) and 14 strikeouts over 9/3 innings. In the following season, Romano made 10 starts and had a record of 4-3 with an 4.74 ERA and 53 strikeouts in 38 innings pitched. He also helped bring the Cowboys to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) World Series. Following this season Romano was transferred into Oral Roberts University in the state of California, where he played for one season with the Golden Eagles. As the team’s closer Romano pitched 29 relief appearances, and had an overall record of 3-4, 11 , saves 2.66 ERA, and 49 strikeouts over 40/3 innings.
Romano was chosen in the tenth selection round of the 2014. Major League Baseball draft by the Toronto Blue Jays. He was awarded a $25,000 sign-on bonus, and was assigned the rookie level Gulf Coast League Blue Jays. After two appearances Romano was promoted to the Bluefield Blue Jays of the Rookie- Advanced League of the Appalachian League. This is where the 2014 season concluded. In his 13 appearances, Romano posted a 1-1 record, 1.93 ERA, and 34 strikeouts in the 28 innings pitched. As spring training began to prepare for 2015 Romano injured the ulnar collateral ligament and then in April, the team had Tommy John surgery. As a result of the surgery that he underwent, he was unable to play the entire baseball season in minor leagues. Romano got assigned to Lansing Lugnuts of the Class-A Midwest League at the start of the 2016 season and was released from the injured list 13 June 2016 to begin the first season in his career as a professional. In his first start in the game, he slowed his Great Lakes Loons to two hits while striking seven batters in a 4-1 complete game victory. Romano completed his year with record of 3-2, 2.11 ERA, and 72 strikeouts over 72/3 innings pitched. Romano pitched the entirety of 2017’s baseball season in the minors with Dunedin Blue Jays of the Advanced-A Florida State League, and pitched to a 7-5 mark, 3.39 ERA, and 38 strikeouts over the 138 innings.
In 2018, the Blue Jays invited Romano to spring training. He began the season with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats of the Double-A Eastern League. On May 16, Romano pitched six no-hit inning against the Hartford Yard Goats, and became the first pitcher in the minors to reach seven wins. After reaching an 8–0 record with a 2.04 ERA, Romano was promoted to the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons on May 27.
