Gafa was a full-time student during his entire experience at University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. After being redshirted in his freshman year during 2008, the player played seven games for the Tar Heels in 2009 and scored his first goal in a collegiate match on the 28th of October during 7-0 defeat to Stetson University. Gafa was a part of the team in 2010, making 19 appearances and three games in the midfield. He completed the season with two goals and an assist. In 2011 Gafa changed to right back and played in all 26 games and started with the 24th. He scored 2 goals, and 2 assists in the year , including the game-winning goal against fellow NC State, a team that was ranked as a rival NC State in the ACC Quarterfinal. He was a part of a defense that conceded just 18 goals throughout the season , and was ranked 11th across the country with an average of 0.66 Goals As Average. In 2011, the Tar Heels went on to take home their first National Championship, their second in school history, beating UNC Charlotte 1-0. In his final year with North Carolina, Gafa started in all 22 games and was able to finish the year with four goals and two assists. Between 2008 and 2012, Gafa went through four consecutive College Cups and just fell just short of making it to the fifth round after being eliminated from the Elite 8 versus Indiana in 2012.

On the 27th of March Gafa signed his debut professional deal. He joined NASL team Tampa Bay Rowdies on a two-year agreement. Gafa made his debut for the club the following month in April 27. He came in as an early substitute to Jay Needham who left the match in the 12th minute due to an injury. The Rowdies won the game 2-1.
