Joos Valgaeren (Dutch pronunciation”‘jo:s fal’ga:r@(n)[‘jo:s fal’ga:r@(n)] born the 3rd of March in 1976) is a Belgian former professional footballer from the international league who was a defensive player. His previous teams include Club Brugge in Belgium, Roda JC and FC Emmen in the Netherlands and Celtic and Celtic in Scotland. The most successful time of his career was with Celtic where he was able to win three league championships and was part of the team which reached the 2003 UEFA Cup Final.
He also played for his nation, and was part of the Belgian team at Euro 2000 where he played in all three group matches.
On 8 September 2013, Valgaeren appeared for the “Celtic XI” during the Stiliyan Petrov charity match put on by Celtic FC.
Growing up within Leuven, Joos Valgaeren started his career at the amateur side Serskamp in the town he grew up in. He later moved to K.F.C. Verbroedering Geel where he was able to be a solid and steady centre-back and a an empathetic full-back in the youth team of the club. After a few seasons at Geel he made the move to Eerste Klasse side KV Mechelen in 1994. At the age of 21, Valgaeren joined Dutch Eredivisie club Roda JC where he made it into the first team in the second season. His consistent performances in the first team of Roda JC earned him a invitation to the Belgium team from coach Georges Leekens in late 1997. After a long absence due to a cruciate ligament strain, Valgaeren went on to enjoy a stellar season at Roda and won his first major award on the 21st of May, 2000 when Roda defeated NEC by 2-0 at the time of the 2000 Dutch Cup Final. When he quit the club the media had linked him to huge-money transfers towards Ajax in the Netherlands and Bayern Munich.

The debut of Valgaeren in Belgium in 1997, in an friendly match in 1997 against Austria on the King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels. After a successful club season during 1999-2000, he was included as a member of Robert Waseige’s squad of 23 of the 2000 European Football Championships and took part for all of the three groups matches. He helped Belgium get into qualifying for the 2002 FIFA World Cup but was unable to participate in the event due to injuries.
Celtic Manager Martin O’Neill signed Valgaeren in 2000 after he was signed by Roda JC for an undisclosed cost, estimated to be in the region of PS3.8 million. Valgaeren was a huge success at Celtic and was instrumental in helping Celtic achieve a domestic treble during his debut year in Glasgow. In his first three years as a player at Celtic, Valgaeren was first choice in a defense of three comprised of his own, Johan Mjallby and Bobo Balde. He regularly played in Europe scoring in a 4-3 victory in Celtic Park in the 2001-02 Champions League. Juventus during 2002-2001 Champions League campaign, and was part of the Celtic team that made it to the 2003 UEFA Cup Final. But, Valgaren was plagued by injuries throughout his time at Celtic and didn’t take part in regular games. In the year Gordon Strachan took over as Celtic manager in the summer of 2005, he was let go as a free-transfer after five years with the club, which more than 100 games he played for. His last appearance for Celtic was in at the Scottish Cup Final.
In June 2005 Valgaeren returned to Belgium to sign for Club Brugge on a free transfer from Celtic. On 26 May 2007, Valgaeren played in the Brugge side that defeated Standard Liège 1–0 to win the Belgian Cup. He made over 35 appearances for Club Brugge. In 2008, he signed a two-year contract at FC Emmen for the seasons 2008–09 and 2009–10 with an option for another year. He got a lot trouble with injuries and during the season 2009–10 he stopped playing professional football in November 2009.
