Jonquel Orthea Jones (born January 5 1994) is a Bosnian and Bahamian professional basketball player who plays for the Connecticut Sun of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). Jones was selected as the 6th overall selection at the time of the 2016 WNBA Draft. In May 2019 she has also been granted her citizenship in Bosnia and Herzegovina, allowing her to play for the national team.
In the year 2018, Jones would have a diminished role on the team despite her achievements during the last season. After her sophomore season Jones was named the center of the Sun. Jones enjoyed a breakout season in 2017 with her new role as the starting center. After a 0-4 start, Jones led the Sun to their first victory of the season. She scored 23 points with 21 rebounding in a 97-79 victory against the Chicago Sky, making her the 13th player in the history of the league to post a 20-point and 20, rebound performance. On July 8, 2017 the Sun achieved a milestone as they made history by completing the greatest comeback in the history of their franchise after beating their opponents the Washington Mystics 96-92 after overcoming the deficit by 22 points. increased their record to 10-7. Jones scored a team-leading 22 points, and added 9 rebounds in the victory. Jones was named to be a part of the 2016 WNBA All-Star Game, her first ever All-Star Game appearance. Jones was able to finish the season with an average of a double-double of the areas of rebounds and points. She she also hit career highs in rebounding, scoring, and blocked shots. Jones is quickly becoming one of the young stars of the league. She set a single season record for rebounding, taking 403 rebounds during the 2017 season, surpassing Tina Charles previous record of 398 (record was broken by Sylvia Fowles in 2018).
