Sackner-Bernstein joined FDA on August 8, 2008 and was appointed the Associate Center Director, directing Post Market Operations as well as Technology and Innovation programs. As the initial associate Center Director in charge of Technology and Innovation, Sackner-Bernstein established the Innovation Initiative in 2011, which later was the catalyst for the Early Feasibility Program and laid the foundation for the Breakthrough Device Program.
The most frequently cited research of his was on whether the recently launched heart failure medication Nesiritide (hr-BNP, Natrecor) was secure and effective, and included a the need for massive clinical trials prior to the widespread usage. Although nesiritide was predicted to make 1 billion dollars in sales in 2006, these research studies caused controversy, which eventually resulted in a significant decrease in utilization by doctors.

Sackner-Bernstein graduated from the university of Pennsylvania’s Moore School of Electrical Engineering in 1983 (BSEE),. He then earned the requirements for his MD in the same year at Jefferson Medical College, during which he wrote code on the moon. He completed an internship in internal medicine and then cardiology within Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. In addition, Sackner Bernstein completed an internship in research on heart failing beneath Milton Packer at Mount Sinai.
Sackner-Bernstein was a member of the Columbia University faculty in 1993 in the Division of Circulatory Physiology, which is where he started the clinic research department.
