Michie attended the United World College of the Atlantic from 1973 when he was awarded the International Baccalaureate. Then, he was awarded an award to Balliol College, Oxford, where he graduated with first class honors in Philosophy Politics, Economics and History and later, received a doctorate. He did this after obtaining the MSc of Economics (with distinction) at Queen Mary, University of London. In 1983, he was transferred to the Economics Department of the Trades Union Congress and later in 1988, he moved to Brussels as an Expert for the European Commission, before becoming an academic at the University of Cambridge in 1990. After seven years in Cambridge initially as a professor in the Economics Faculty and then the Judge Business School – he accepted the Sainsbury Chair of Management at the University of London, where he was also the Head of the school of Management & Organizational Psychology at Birkbeck College.

Michie was among the early chairpersons in Shareholders United, formerly Shareholders United Against Murdoch, an organisation that was not-for-profit and dedicated to promoting fan ownership at Manchester United F.C. They successfully stopped Rupert Murdoch’s plan to acquire Manchester United. The term of his chair ended in the year 2004, Shareholders United had over thirty thousand members and owned one percent of Manchester United. The organization is now called Manchester United Supporters Trust.
