Jonathan Meese was born as the third son of parents who were who were German and Welsh in Tokyo, Japan. Her mother Brigitte Renate Meesereturned home to Germany in the late 1970s. His father, a banking entrepreneur Reginald Selby Meese, born in Newport (Wales) was a resident throughout the years in Japan up to his demise in 1988. Because Meese did not speak English upon returning to Germany and had a difficult time to adapt. After a time in Scotland His mother-in-law recommended him to pursue a degree in Economics.
Since 1998, Meese participated in a range of international and national individual and group exhibitions. Particularly, space-based installations and performances were showcased. In most cases, the main character in his works is Meese himself, whether as self-portraits, disguised or self-portraits or in the form of collages, actions as well as drawings and pictures. The thematic content stems primarily from the national socialism in addition to thematic and theatrical connections to German literature and philosophy. In his performances and actions Meese particularly directed his attention to Adolf Hitler, showing repeatedly and in a provocative manner his Nazi salute.
In 2008 Meese created “Marlene Dietrich in Dr. No’s Ludovico-Clinic (Dr. Baby’s Erzland)”, an immersive multimedia installation within The Watermill Center on Long Island, New York.
For the Salzburg Festival 2010, Meese created an acclaimed stage design for the world premiere of Wolfgang Rihm’s opera Dionysus. For the Bayreuth Festival in 2016 Meese was offered a contract to direct a new production of Parsifal. This contract has since been rescinded, the official reason being that it would have been too expensive for the Festival to maintain.
Since 1998, Meese has been attracting attention through installations as well as performances and other activities in the art world. In the Berlin Biennale, curated by Klaus Biesenbach, Hans-Ulrich Obrist and Nancy Spector, Meese met an audience of many. Meese presented her installation Ahoi der Angst, a photograph collage dedicated to Marquis de Sade. It was to be considered in the future works of Meese. Musicians, actors, and politicians were featured in a photo-collage. Visitors could listen poetry, listen to music, or read poems by Rolf Dieter Brinkmann and watch the film Caligula. The posters included Rainer Werner Fassbinder Klaus Kinski, Nina Hagen along with Oscar Wilde.

Jonathan Meese (born January 23 1970 Tokyo) is a German artist, sculptor as well as a performance artist and installation artist living at Berlin as well as Hamburg. Meese worked with Franz Erhard Walther, Daniel Richter, Martin Kippenberger, Horst Janssen, Vicco von Bulow alias Loriot and Otto Waalkes at the University of Fine Arts of Hamburg between 1995 and 1998, however, he was not awarded an academic degree. Daniel Richter recommended Meese to the gallery of Contemporary Fine Arts (Berlin, Germany).
Inspired by Meese’s space installations, the producer Claus Boje and the director Leander Haußmann commissioned him to produce a backdrop for their film Sonnenallee (1999). Finally, he also got a role in the film and played the role of a crazy artist. Meese’s works for Sonnenallee were shown in 1999 in an exhibition at the Neuer Aachener Kunstverei art museum (Aachen, Germany).
