Genest-Jourdain has served as an New Democratic Party Member of the Parliament of Manicouagan and also as an official participant in the Official Opposition Shadow Cabinet from 2011 to 2015.
Genest-Jourdain won over Genest-Jourdain defeated Bloc Quebecois the incumbent member Gerard Asselin at the 2011 Canadian federal election, and became the first NDP representative of in the Manicouagan riding. Together with his fellow NDP members Romeo Saganash, Genest-Jourdain is one of the two First Nations members currently representing Quebec in the House of Commons of Canada. Genest-Jourdain serves on the Canadian House of Commons Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development.
After her election to Parliament in May of 2011 Genest-Jourdain was named Deputy Critic in the area of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development by Layton.
