He was unable to defend his title after an upset defeat to Kiko Martinez on the 17th of August 2013, by TKO.
In the 2007, World Amateur Boxing Championships he beat Chawazi Chatsygov, PanAm Games silver medalist Claudio Marrero in 19:3 but fell to McJoe Arroyo, 9:23. When he made it to the quarterfinals, He was able to join fellow teammate Darley Perez for the qualification to compete in Beijing 2008.

Romero who is also known as “Momo” comes from a boxing family that is from his “El Retiro” neighbourhood of Santiago de Cali in the Valle del Cauca region. His elder brother Rene who was who was a national amateur champion was shot in 2002.
Romero was awarded bronze in the Boxing during the 2006 Central American and Caribbean Games in which he was defeated in the semi-final against Guillermo Rigondeaux by walkover but was unable to compete during the 2007 PanAmerican Games due to an injury to his shoulder.
He won the IBF Super Bantamweight on February 16, 2013 against Alejandro Lopez (24-3, 7 KOs) to claim the vacant title.
