Jon Shain (born Jonathan Bruce Shain on November 18, 1967, in Haverhill, Massachusetts, United States) is an American folk musician, guitarist, singer- songwriter producer, teacher and recording artist from Durham, North Carolina. Shain has been named 2018 International Blues Challenge winner in the category of solo or duo.

The year 1996 was when Shain as well as Simonsen started the group WAKE which featured Kirsten O’Rourke Simonsen on vocals , and Stu Cole as bass. After 1997, Cole quit to form Squirrel Nut Zippers and he was replaced by Darrell Dixon on bass and John Currie on guitar. WAKE was more influenced by an alt- country style. WAKE ended up breaking up in early 1998.

In 1998, Shain and Simonsen began work on what would become Jon Shain’s first solo album, Brand New Lifetime, which ranged from the alt-country of WAKE to a more stripped down re-discovery of Shain’s acoustic blues background. Shain began to play shows solo and with his new group, The Jon Shain Trio – composed of FJ Ventre on bass, John Currie on dobro and guitar, and Bill Newton on harmonica. This group stayed together the longest of any of shain’s musical associations. Shain has recorded several albums on his own Flyin’ Records and continues to tour and record regularly with FJ Ventre.

Shain was a student at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, where he majored in the field of history. It was at this point that Shain was exposed to the music of the folk region. Along with playing in an emcee-style frat rock cover band, The Blind Mice, Shain began to study and perform Piedmont blues. Shain was a member of The Slewfoot Blues Band, which was led by Mickey “Slewfoot” McLaughlin and “Sleepy” Tom Forsythe. With Slewfoot, Shain met North Carolina blues legends like Big Boy Henry, John Dee Holeman, Lightnin’ Wells along with jazz piano player Brothers Yusef Salim. Shain describes his version of blues as basing on Piedmont blues. He has also said, “I’m interested in the kinds of songs that aren’t necessarily in standard blues progressions.” Shain also took advantage to participate in Duke’s jazz programs, spending a semester studying with the saxophonist Paul Jeffrey, a veteran of Thelonious’s group. Shain was able to graduate of Duke at the end of the year 1989 and immediately started pursuing the career of a musician.
