Metzger was a music professor in Elon University since 1989. He was awarded Elon’s Distinguished Scholar Award in 2005.
Metzger has played extensively in jazz clubs and festivals throughout the US and across the globe, and has served as an ambassador for jazz for the Department of State under the under the supervision of the United States Information Agency’s Arts America Program, which between 1985 and 1995 featured tours in Belize, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Columbia, Syria, Jordan, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Bahrain, Morocco, Tunisia, Qatar as well as Qatar, Honduras, Panama, Nicaragua United Arab Emerites. In 2010, he was an ambassador for culture to Haceteppe State University in Ankara, Turkey, where he worked with the faculty in the creation the institution’s Jazz Studies program.

Metzger met at Langley High School where he was part of the jazz band led by trumpeter George Horan. In 1981, he graduated with his Master of Arts degree from the North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem where he primarily studied alongside J. Massie Johnson. He was a student in masterclasses with marimbists Gordon Stout and Leigh Howard Stevens as well as vibraphonists Milt Jackson Gary Burton, and Dave Samuels. When he was a student in college He began his work with the group in Piedmont, North Carolina, informing his group and creating an new songs.
Jon Metzger/Vibes was his debut album as a leader during 1984, and in New York City with pianist Phil Markowitz, bassist Marc Johnson along with drummer Ted Moore. Out of the Dark with pianist Fred Hersch, bassist Marc Johnson along with Joey Baron, drummer Joey Baron was funded by the National Endowment for the Arts fellowship , and was recorded by VSOP Records in 1986. It has also been released as a bandleader as well as a sideman on The Summit, Soul Note, Jazz Karma, and Elon Improvibes labels along with John Brown, Ron Elliston, Cyrus Chestnut, Neena Freelon, Vincent Gardner, Danny Gottlieb, Allison Miller, Herlin Riley, Claire Ritter, Ronnie Wells as well as Jack Wilkins.
