Jonathan Denis Langford (born 11 October 1957) is a Welsh musician and artist who lives within Chicago, Illinois, United States. He was one of the original members of the punk group The Mekons, post-punk group The Three Johns, and alternative country bands The Waco Brothers and Pine Valley Cosmonauts. He has fought for the repeal of death penalties in Illinois.

Alongside John Hyatt and Phillip Brennan, Langford released several albums featuring punk rock fueled by drum machines between 1982 and 1987. A box set of retrospectives came out in the month of August of 2015.

The Killer Shrews were a group composed of Langford (lead vocals), Gary Lucas, and Tony Maimone. They released one self-titled album on Enemy Records in 1993.

The Waco Brothers make country-punk music, and are a Chicago-based amalgam of players from the Pine Valley Cosmonauts family and others, who have been recording since 1995. For their first albums, they included Dean Schlabowske (guitar/vocal), Tracey Dear (mandolin/vocal), Alan Doughty (bass/vocal), Mark Durante (pedal steel guitar), and Mekons drummer Steve Goulding) By 2015, Goulding, now based in New York City, had been replaced by Joe Camarillo (drums), and Durante had left.

In the late 1980s and into the 1990s, Langford was one of the first to incorporate popular music from the country and folk genres into rock. Langford has released a range of solo albums and also recorded with other groups outside from The Mekons, most notably the Waco Brothers, which he co-founded following his move into Chicago in the mid 1990s. He is a part of the independent label based in Chicago, Bloodshot.

When he was younger, Langford would visit his grandparents in Croesyceiliog and whose friend from the family owned two pubs: the Cambrian Arms and The Six In Hand. He was a student at Gaer Infants School and Gaer Junior School as well as Brynglas Primary School, the Newport High School middle school and finally, Queen’s Hill. In 1972-1973, following his time playing football and rugby at the age of 15, Langford realized he preferred playing music more. He was a big fan from David Bowie and was listening to lots of Man.

Langford was the drummer of the punk group The Mekons when it formed at the University of Leeds in 1977 He later took his guitar when other members quit the band. The Mekons signed with Virgin Records but according to Langford the band “got fired.” They made their debut US performance during New Year’s Eve in 1980 and then stopped live performances for a time and then released their 1982 album The Mekons Story. They returned to performing in the public arena in 1984, and played their first show as a benefit to the British miners who were members of the union. After signing with major American Label A&M Records in the late 1980s, the label’s shuffle led to the band attempting to get out of the label. As a result, they released a single for the label the title The Mekons’ Curse which was only released in the world by way of import. A documentary entitled The Revenge of Mekons was made available in 2014 by director Joe Angio. The Mekons are still recording and perform live in 2019.

In 1988, Langford co-produced (with Mark Riley) a Johnny Cash tribute album, ‘Til Things are Brighter…, to raise funds for the Terrence Higgins Trust. The album was endorsed and admired by Cash himself who is featured alongside Langford and Riley on its cover.
