According to reports, she shot down a helicopter using an automatic weapon on 17 February 1974 following refusing to flee. The helicopter crash has been debunked by War Veterans chairman, Christopher Mutsvangwa following her deportation from the group; other experts in ballistics have doubted that it would be possible to down an aircraft using this kind of weapon in the manner she described it on her story. In 1975 she was the political trainer of two bases for military that had been successful. In her early 20s Mujuru was the camp director at the Chimoio refugee and military camps in Mozambique.

She adopted the nom de guerre Teurai Ropa (Shona meaning “spill blood”), and eventually became among the first female leaders in Mugabe’s ZANLA forces. The year 1977 was the time she got married to Solomon Mujuru, known then by his name de-guerre Rex Nhongo, deputy commander-in-chief of ZANLA. The was the same year that she was one of the youngest members in the ZANU Central Committee, a member of the National Executive. Political activities led to her becoming an easy target for Rhodesian security forces. They attempted to take her hostage but failed. On November 23, 1977, the ZANLA camp in Chimoio was attacked by Rhodesian forces in the course of Operation Dingo. Mujuru was able to avoid capture by hiding herself in a pit latrine shared by all the campers. In 1978 the year her camp was attacked Muruju was pregnant with her first child at the time — was still fighting in active combat. She gave birth just a few two days after the attack.

She currently lives on Alamein Farm, a productive and high-value operation illegally requisitioned as part of the land reform programme from Guy Watson- Smith in 2001, as found by the Zimbabwe High Court and international courts. In 2001 the Mujuru family became the subject of the first legal action against any member of Mr Mugabe’s inner circle implicated in the illegal seizure of land and assets.
