Hoogerland joined Androni Giocattoli-Venezuela during the 2014 season following his previous team, Vacansoleil-DCM ended up folding at the end of the 2013 campaign.

In August 2014, Hoogerland was announced as the first signing for the new Dutch Pro-Continental Team Roompot, which formed for the 2015 season.

In 2011, the Tour de France Hoogerland won the Mountain jersey during the sixth stage. After losing it on the eighth stage Hoogerland was able to regain the jersey during the ninth stage. In the same stage, Hoogerland was later involved in a traumatic crash after the breakaway rider who was with him team Sky’s Juan Antonio Flecha, was hit by the France Televisions car, causing Hoogerland to collide with the fence of a barbed wire. Despite severe leg injuries, which required 33 stitches, Hoogerland was able to finish the stage and lost nearly 17 minutes due to the impact of the collision. Flecha and Hoogerland received the Combativity prize on the day. In November 2014, Hoogerland declared that he had reached an agreement to pay compensation to the insurance company AIG in connection with the incident.
