Tennyson was a graduate of University College Cork with an honors degree in civil and environmental engineering. It was while at UCC where he won the three consecutive Datapac Hotshot awards.

In 2003, Tennyson took home his second consecutive Leinster medal after a victory of 0-18 to 0-13 over Offaly. Kilkenny then played Galway at the All- Ireland final. Richie Power gave a masterclass of hurling, scoring the winning goal deep into the clock to win the victory by 2-16 to 2-15. Tennyson won his second All-Ireland medal.

In 2004 Carrickshock reached a third consecutive intermediate championship final, having lost the previous two deciders. A narrow 0–14 to 1–10 defeat of Mooncoin gave Tennyson a championship medal. He later won a Leinster medal as Carrickshock defeated St. Patrick’s by 2–16 to 0–7 in the inaugural provincial decider. Tennyson’s side were subsequently defeated by Kildangan in the All- Ireland decider.

Tennyson was still a member of the under-21 team when he was added to the Kilkenny senior panel in 2005. On 12 June 2005 he made his championship debut in a 6–28 to 0–15 Leinster semi-final trouncing of Offaly.

In his time in St. Kieran’s College in Kilkenny, Tennyson established himself as a vital player in the senior team for hurling. In 2002, he was awarded the first Leinster medal after the 1-15-3 win of rivals from the city CBS Kilkenny.
