On the 9th of October, 2016 Pope Francis declared that he was planning to elevate Ribat into the cardinal’s rank during an upcoming conclave scheduled for the 19th of November, 2016. Ribat was appointed a Cardinal Priest that same day and was assigned in the title church in San Giovanni Battista de Rossi. He was the first cardinal of his country.

Ribat is a native of Volavolo, Papua New Guinea. He formally became part of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in February 1979. He was ordained as a priest on the 1st of December, 1985.
On October 30, 2000 Pope John Paul II designated him as the auxiliary Bishop of Bereina as well as titular bishop for Macriana Minor. The bishop was consecrated on the 11th of February, 2001. He was named the Bishop of Bereina on the 12th of February, 2002. Pope Benedict XVI named him Coadjutor Archbishop for Port Moresby on 16 April 2007 and he took over this post on the 26th of March 2008.
Francis made him a member of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development on 23 December 2017.
