Photographs from On Boxing appeared at an exhibition by the International Center for Photography in New York City of the “most notable photography books” of 1987, entitled “Midtown Review”. In the course of recovering from Hodgkin’s disease Ranard went back to the home where his family resided at Vienna, Virginia, and in the middle of the 1970s when he was injured in the mid-1970s, he broke his neck in a car crash and utilized the insurance settlement to attend Louisville’s Center for Photographic Studies. In the latter part of the 1970s, Ranard was able to showcase his photography in the two alternate Louisville news publications, City Paper and Louisville Today and was experimenting with his work. He earned a reputation at this point “as one of Louisville’s most active and original photographers” and published his work in a journalistic manner and also exhibiting at art galleries such as The Louisville’s Portland Museum.

Within his portfolio of boxing called The Brutal aesthetic, Ranard developed his work into a meticulously controlled, disciplined style of black-and white photography. While Ranard took pictures of fights inside the arena, the major portion of the portfolio is devoted to documenting the background events of the sport that suggested the sport’s explosive nature. Marcy Werner, curator of the University of Louisville Fine Print Collection and has completed an MA dissertation about the work of Ranard and claims that it was at the period of time when Ranard changed into a photographer who was documentary to an acclaimed Social documentary photographer. She was able to observe, for instance his critical depiction on the entourage that includes managers and promoters that accompany fighters and earn (or expect to earn) money by sacrificing fighters in the boxing ring. She also observed a few instances of mildness in the portfolio by referring to the photo “Purcell Davis (1979)” that shows a wrestler taking a weigh-in and disrobing, with his head covered in a hooded jacket to ensure that only the contours of his body was visible which brought to mind the technique used in Michelangelo’s David. Then, in “Round 1–Jerry McIntyre (vs. Greg Page) (1979)” A photograph of a slack-faced fighter being in a ring with his handlers She was reminded of The Deposition by Raphael. The Deposition.

In 1985, Ranard read an essay by Joyce Carol Oates on boxing which appeared in the New York Times Magazine and approached Oates with the idea of a book collaboration. In his letter to her, Ranard expressed his aesthetics on documentary photography:
