John P. Wolfe is one of the most popular and richest Chemist who was born on August 12, 1970 in Greeley, Colorado, United States. John P. Wolfe (born on August 12, 1970) is an American scientist and professor of chemical chemistry in the University of Michigan. He is famous for palladium catalyzed C-N and C-C bonds formation reactions. Wolfe was also one of the most important scientists involved in the creation of Buchwald binding ligands, among that is appropriately called “JohnPhos” after him. Wolfe has been a professor in The University of Michigan since 2002.
It is generally accepted that JohnPhos can be used as a ligand to Buchwald- Hartwig Cross Coupling C-X bond formation the Heck reaction, and the Suzuki- Miyaura coupling. JohnPhos is an especially effective catalyst for the palladium-catalyzed bonding of bromides, aryl chlorides and triflates. The ligand allows for the reactions to occur at room temperature, and it performs very well in a range of substrate combinations between 80-110 degrees Celsius, which includes chloropyridines, triflates that are functionalized arylhalides. JohnPhos is especially effective in aminations of -neutral and electron rich aryl chlorides , with an array of the amine coupling partners. An example of catalytic the amination process of an aryl chloride N-methylaniline at room temperatures is illustrated in the Scheme 3.
Since 2002 Wolfe made the move in 2002 to Ann Arbor, MI, where he was a member of in the University of Michigan faculty. Since then, his research has centered on many aspects of chemistry that all contribute to the creation of novel reactions using metal catalysts for the production of fascinating biologically active substances. Within Michigan, Wolfe is one of the most revered faculty members in the department of Chemistry for his excellent lectures, particularly in organic Chemistry. The university has acknowledged his contribution by awarding the professor with awards for teaching and his students cite his name in the form of “the best professor [they]’ve had at University of Michigan”, “he make[s] organic chemistry fun and not intimidating” and “words cannot express how great of a teacher and person he is”.

Overman and his research group as an National Institute of Health (NIH) National Research Service Award (NRSA) postdoctoral fellow.
John P. Wolfe was born in Greeley, Colorado. His graduation from University of Colorado, Boulder in 1994, with the degree of B.A. in Chemistry. In his time as a student in Chemistry, he was an assistant researcher in Chemistry to professor Gary A. Molander, working on the development of an SmI2 enhanced alternative to cyanoacetic ester synthesizing.
During Wolfe’s graduate career at MIT with Professor Stephen L. Buchwald, he was involved in developing dialkylbiaryl phosphine ligands (now referred to as “Buchwald ligands”) that are highly efficient in palladium-catalyzed reactions. One of these ligands – JohnPhos – was named after him and is now commercially available.
