John Alexander Ogonowski was born on the 24th of February, 1951 at Lowell, Massachusetts, where he was raised. He was a student at St. Stanislaus School, Keith Academy in Lowell. He was a student at Lowell Technological Institute (now the University of Massachusetts Lowell) and was an active member of the Pi Lambda Phi fraternity. The year he was graduated, 1972. He earned an undergraduate degree from the field of Nuclear Engineering.
Remotely controlled model aircraft flying field, located in Tewksbury, Massachusetts, has been named in honor of Captain Ogonowski. Ogonowski was a graduate of the University of Massachusetts Lowell, Ogonowski was posthumously awarded with an honorary doctorate in the commencement ceremony in 2003 at the Tsongas Arena.
The USAID Farmer to Farmer program was renamed the “John Ogonowski and Doug Bereuter FTF Program” as part of the 2008 Farm Bill.
Ogonowski and his copilot were killed on September 11, 2001, when they were in the control room in the hijacking incident of American Airlines Flight 11. After his death the plane was smashed in the North Tower of the World Trade Center.

John Alexander Ogonowski (February 24 1951 – September 11 2001) was an American pilot and agricultural activist. He was killed by terrorists when he was piloting American Airlines Flight 11, which was hijacked later and crashed through the North Tower of the World Trade Center in the wake of 11 September 11 attacks.
Ogonowski began his career as commercial pilot in 1978. For the next 23 years, he piloted aircrafts to work for American Airlines, and was an active part of the Allied Pilot Association. Through his commercial piloting career he was introduced to Margaret who was a flight attendant who was known by the name “Peggy”, whom he later got married.
Ogonowski was survived by his wife Margaret and daughters Laura, Caroline, and Mary Catherine. His younger brother, Jim Ogonowski, who is also an agricultural activist, made an unsuccessful run for the United States House of Representatives in 2007.
